Essential Tremor is a neurological condition that causes an involuntary shake of your hands, head, voice, torso, legs, whole body and internal tremors. I have all of these.

Essential Tremor is a neurological condition that causes an involuntary shake of your hands, head, voice, torso, legs, whole body and internal tremors. I have all of these.

ET makes everyday tasks very challenging like trying to write, eat and drink.

ET is often misdiagnosed as Parkinson's Disease but it is actually 8 times more common than PD.

ET is a very embarrassing condition especially in public which can cause Social Anxiety and Social Phobia. That is why we often hide away.

ET is hereditary in my family with now 7 generations having it that we know of. There are no meds specifically made for ET and no cure. We need that CURE!

My ET History

2025 - I have had ET all my life. As a toddler my hands would slightly tremor and my Mum remembers as a toddler that my body would 'quiver' in nervous situations. My parents thought I was just a nervous kid.

School was tough as a 'nervous kid' I would often get bullied as I was an easy target for bullies, I was already shaking so any confr

School was tough as a 'nervous kid' I would often get bullied as I was an easy target for bullies, I was already shaking so any confrontation made me shake more. I often was in trouble for my messy handwriting and bookwork and sports were hard for me too when it came to throwing and hitting balls etc.

When I left school and started working, customer service was difficult as my tremors had progressed and were noticeable especially in my writing.

At the age of 27 I went to a neurologist for something else and she asked me "Why are you shaking?" I replied "I'm just a nervous person, I have always shook" She said "No you're not. We'll look into this" The neurologist sent me for tests and when I went back to get the results she said "You have Essential Tremor, it's where your body finds it essential to tremor. There is no specific medication for ET and no cure, how do you live with it" I said "I've had it all my life, it's actually a normal way of life for me." She tried me on the medications Inderal (Propanalol) and Primidone but they didn't help me. By this time i had the hand and yes-yes head tremor. I had had 3 children by then and a 4th child a few years after being diagnosed.

Unfortunately all my 4 children have ET, theirs started in their teenage years, now they range in age from 32 to 22 they all haven't progressed much and all still only have hand tremors. Now my 2 eldest grandchildren are showing signs of ET too sadly.

Now I am 54 and my tremors have progressed, I now have full body tremors - hands, legs, torso, head and Internal tremors. I also at times have jaw, face and voice tremors too. I don't take anything for my tremors and still just live with them as they are unfortunately still a normal way of life for me.

I hope sharing how I live with Essential Tremor through my Shakey Nan pages can help other ETers not feel so alone with this condition and also help ETers with my hints and tips on how I manage to do things.

Hopefully 1 day my videos will help in finding that cure for us all too, that is my dream.

Where you can find me

I started in Dec 2020, first with a personnel blog on facebook called Shakey Nan, to show how I live with ET so I can get my confidence back and stop hiding away. I had my own shirts made to help me spread the word about Shakey Nan so people will watch and learn about ET. Now I'm now on Youtube, Instagram and Tiktok too and I am helping o

Everyday I am still finding new ETers or someone that knows someone and even some that are just curious and want to learn more about ET, which is fantastic.

On Tuesdays I post a video onto my pages which are :

Facebook - Shakey Nan

Youtube - Essential Tremor - Shakey Nan

Tiktok - Shakey Nan Essential Tremor

Intagram - Shakey Nan _ Essential Tremor

I also do lives on Tiktok nearly everyday, twice a day, at Midday and at 8.30pm (Sydney, Australia time)

On my Tiktok lives I have been building DIY Miniature Houses and I love it. They are like mini extreme Ikea kits where you have to build everything from wood, wire, fabrics, little beads etc and YES even with my shakey hands I CAN DO IT! You can do anything too, don't ever give up finding your ET way to do it..

I hope you will help me spread the ET word so we can all come out of hiding and get our lives back
